In February 2016 after winning the Kendal Town Council “Love your Community“ award we received an invitation to form a steering group for the Kendal Mint Clean campaign.
A logo competition was sent out to all schools in the area and the winning design was chosen from Kirkbie Kendal School.
The initiative was to support the national Clean for the Queen campaign so in March a team made up of the Kendal town council, volunteers of Chestnut and the local community.
The 1st event saw us making a difference with collecting litter around the Westmorland Hospital Site and Burton Road. On a frosty morning the team collected 5 bags of rubbish.
The 2nd event was a community litter pick along the canal path in Kendal where we collected 14 bags of rubbish. Well done to everyone involved!
The 3rd events were for the local schools to take part. With support from our team local children participated in a schools clean up of their grounds. Certificates and gift vouchers were sent in appreciation of their work.
The 4th event was the Costa to Costa campaign
35 willing volunteers gave up 2 hours of their time to improve the environment in the Kendal area by collecting litter. In various teams we endeavoured to litter pick in the highlighted “Grot Spots” around Kendal, where 25 bags were collected overall! The atmosphere was brilliant for the volunteers, the sun was out and the spirits were high ending with a free drink from Costa thanks to everyone involved!
We are now creating a banner and regular litter picks throughout Kendal encouraging local community groups to take pride in their own area of town. Stickers are being displayed in shop windows, and banners will be put up to promote the next community litter pick
